Get Queinnec's "Lisp in Small Pieces". Chapter 5 of Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs and chapter 7 of Lisp in Small Pieces both present byte-code interpreting virtual machines for Scheme that are implemented in Scheme. Now, the programming concepts book that I really want would be the successor to Lisp in Small Pieces (ISBN 0-521-56247-3), but AFAICT, it hasn't been finished. One of my New Year's goals is to re-read Lisp in Small Pieces and implement all 11 interpreters and 2 compilers. Caveat: this is not a best-of nor a comprehensive list of Lisp books; it is merely a selection of Lisp books you may not have heard of or that special to me in some way. The book is no longer listed with a price, nor is it listed as available, except from other sellers. It looks like the Lisp In Small Pieces for $3.95 craze has met its end. I am actually selling these items so I can pay Dreamhost for another year of hosting, so it's for a good cause. It was written by someone who knows his stuff and knows how to teach it. Am cherry-picking my way through Queinnec's Lisp in Small Pieces, and your syntax-case exposition is exactly what I needed to introduce dynamic bindings. This entry was posted in Book by tkg.
